How to keep your eyes healthy and prevent dry eyes!

How to keep your eyes healthy and Prevent Dry Eyes

Regular Eye Examination is Important.

An eye examination that includes pupil dilation can detect many common disease conditions such as glaucoma, diabetes, and macular degeneration in their early stages.  Eye is the window to your soul - very true.

Wear Sunglasses to Protect from UV Damage and wind for dry eyes.

Ultra violet rays from the sun can be damaging to your eyes as well as your skin.  Be sure to select sunglasses that block out 99 to 100 percent of both the UV-A and UV-B radiation.  If you have dry eyes, be sure to select the wrap around sunglasses to shield away the wind which can make your dry eye symptoms worse.

Rest your eyes

If you spend a lot of time at the computer, cell phone, watching TV, it's important to rest your eyes to prevent eye strain. Typical eye problems include red, irritated eyes, blurry vision, headaches, and fatigue.  We even have a name for this problem called "Computer Vision Syndrome"  Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds.

Clean your contact lenses

Always wash your hands thoroughly before putting in or taking out your contact lenses. Hand lotion, dirt can cause eye infections, and cause your contact lenses not to wet properly. Make sure to disinfect contact lenses as instructed and replace them as directed.

Stop Smoking

Cigarette smoke is known to affect eye health in addition to being bad for your body. Research has linked smoking to an increased risk of developing dry eyes, macular degeneration, cataracts and optic nerve damage, all of which can lead to blindness.

Slim Down- Stay Healthy

You have probably heard this many times, besides the social stigma, being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and other systemic conditions, which can lead to vision loss ( diabetic retinopathy) and glaucoma.

Family History of eye diseases

It’s important to know if anyone in your family has been diagnosed with an eye disease or condition since many of these eye disorders are hereditary.  Conditions such as chronic dry eyes, Blepharitis, glaucoma, Sjogren's syndrome and more.
