DASH Diet to Prevent and Relief Dry Eye Syndrome

Inflammation is involved in chronic dry eyes, autoimmune diseases such as Sjogrens, rheumatoid arthritis, Reynaud's syndrome and more.  The proper diet can greatly reduce inflammation and help with recovery.

This blog gives a brief guideline to the Dash diet which has shown promise in reducing inflammation and reduce chronic symptoms

The DASH Diet
DASH diet was developed as a guideline for healthy eating in general.  It is clear that this guideline also help prevent the development of chronic diseases including chronic dry eyes, autoimmune diseases, heart disorders, prevent osteoporosis, and more.

Key features of DASH diet is to increase consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products.

Fruits and vegetables are important because of the low-caloric, high fiber and high-nutrient density, . Low-fat dairy products provide important calcium that is necessary to prevent osteoporosis. Other components of DASH include nuts, legumes (dried beans and peas), whole grains, low salt and reduce sugar intake.

Nuts are rich in mono- and polyunsaturated fats, high in fiber and protein. Legumes are a rich source of protein as well as fiber, and lean meats are important sources of protein. Grains are an important source of energy and should be in the form as whole grains, which will increase fiber consumption.

The DASH diet limits salt to 2300 milligrams per day, sugar intake to 5 tablespoons per week for the average 2000-calories/day diet.

Table 1 shows the recommended intakes of each of these food groups in servings per day for those who consume 2000 calories per day. from revised Dash diet 2010

How is diet related to Chronic Dry Eyes and Autoimmune Diseases- Sjogren's, Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Links between Diet, Digestive Health, Dry Eyes and Stress

You are what you eat.  Does that sound familiar?

A healthy digestive system is essential to both physically and emotionally health.  Healthy digestive system starts with a healthy diet.

Eyes are the second most physiologically active part of our body next to our brain.  Our eyes require a lot of nutrients derived from the food we eat and the nutrients that get absorbed through our digestive system to maintain healthy vision.
Research has indicated that Age Related Macular Degeneration is an eye disease due to starvation of the retina, where essentially the retina is being deprived of essential nutrients due to circulatory changes and poor absorption of the nutrients from the food we eat.  Most individuals with Macular Degeneration has high cholesterol levels before medical intervention.  This is supported by large amount of research showing that the risk of onset of Macular Degeneration can be dramatically reduced through diet, lifestyle and targeted supplementation.
Diet and nutrition can also be linked to a wide range of other eye conditions as well including glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy.
Chronic stress causes a number of negative effects in the gut including:
  • decreased enzyme production to digest food
  • decreased oxygen delivery to the gut
  • decreased absorption of nutrients
  • reduced blood flow to the digestive tract, leading to decreased metabolism.
How to reduce stress-

Meditations in the form of yoga, walking, exercising can help reduce the effects of stress, function better with a clear head, and satisfaction in both personal and business relationships.

Dry Eye Treatments- Home Remedies for Demodex- Eye Mites Can Cause Irritation.

Eyelash mites, also called "Demodex" can cause irritation.

Eyelash mites are tiny parasites that live in the hair follicles of the eyelash roots. While most people have mites naturally, some people are allergic to them.

Symptoms of Demodex are red eyes, swelling of the eyelid and flaky skin or rashes are common.  These symptoms are the same as Blepharitis. The infection that eyelash mites can cause is known as demodicosis or "Demodex". Treating the infection quickly and completely will help prevent future episodes.

Here is a home remedy to try
Things You'll Need
1.  No tear baby soap
2. Water
3. Washcloth
4. Tea tree oil
5. New make up
6. Clean sheets and pillow cases

Instructions
1.  Wash your face and eye area with a gentle no-tear baby soap. Dilute the baby soap with water to create a 50/50 solution. Gently scrub with a washcloth twice a day.

2.  Apply a drop of tea tree oil diluted with water (50:50) to each eyebrow, as well as a drop to each eyelash, because mites living in the brows can easily drop down into the eyelashes.

3.  Throw away all your eye make-up and buy new items. Avoid wearing any make-up for at least one week, to keep the area clean.

4. Wash sheets and pillowcases on a regular weekly basis.

5. Schedule an appointment with your doctor if the problem persists. Your doctor can prescribe a topical antibiotic ointment to help kill the mites and clear up the problem.

Dry Eye Treatment- Autologous Serum or Artificial Tears?

Eye Drop Photo
It has been estimated that at least 16 million people in the United States has dry eyes.  This number is only increasing due to long hours of computer use and the introduction of smart phones, video games.

The cheapest and most common dry eye treatment is artificial tears.  However, the preservatives in artificial tears can cause allergic reactions with severe side effects.  Non-preservative eye drops are available which are packaged in smaller disposable vials.  Non-preservative eye drops are more expensive.  The idea of using autologous serum as eye drop was introduced because it is a natural component to one's body, it too, must be used without preservatives.   Autologous serum drops are more expensive due to the processing and made into small sterile aliquots for use.

Autologous Serum Eye Drops for Dry Eye.
A research report recently compared the use of autologous serum drops versus artificial eye drops  This research study is based on databases from  Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  There are 5 groups included in this report based on 360 articles where autologous serum drops were used alone, or in combination with artificial tears.  This was then compared to artificial tears alone, placebo or no treatment. The research is based on comprehensive scientific databases using randomized controlled trials.

Based on the reported data from the studies, autologous serum drop was not associated with a significant improvement in tear volume (Schirmer's test), ocular surface integrity (fluorescein or Rose Bengal staining), or impression cytology compared to preservative-free artificial tears.  Autologous serum appears to be a safe treatment option for people with dry eye and may provide some benefit in improving participant reported symptoms in the short term (two weeks) but there is a lack of clear evidence to show that the application of autologous serum offers a significant therapeutic advantage over the use of preservative free artificial tears.

Conclusion:
Autologous serum drops does seems to have a short term psychological advantage on participants reporting dry eye symptoms.  Long term it did not perform better than non-preservative eye drops.

How To Relief Painful Dry Eyes and Cornea Abrasion

Severe cases of chronic dry eyes can result in cornea abrasion.  The uneven cornea creates friction when one blinks resulting in inflammation which leads to cornea abrasion.  The symptoms of cornea abrasion is constant pain, red, stinging eyes.  Eye drops, gel drops, puntal plugs are all ineffective in treating cornea abrasion.  Typical treatment is to use sclera lenses of cornea transplantation.

This is my personal story:
"I am writing this because I have suffered from dry eyes and cornea abrasion for more than 20 years.  I finally  got relief from TheraLife.  I hope this story will encourage you to try TheraLife Eye.  It is different than anything else I have tried.  It really works."

"I had chronic dry eyes for nearly 20 years.   My eyes were very dry, constantly stinging and very  red and bloodshot.  My friends from work actually accused me of being an alcoholic and drinking during work hours.  I was very embarrassed and upset.  After using many different types of eye drops and gels, nothing ever worked.  I also had a prescription for a very expensive eye drop from my doctor and used it for 6 months,  it made my eyes worse.  I stopped using it right away.

I found TheraLife searching on the internet.  I purchased TheraLife Eye plus Omega 3 Fish Oil.  I was stunned. My eyes are nice and white with no burning or stinging sensations after only one month.  My eyes actually shine with a healthy sheen to them.

I am referring everyone that I come across with dry-eye syndrome to call Theralife. I am a Medicare health insurance agent and have over a thousand clients.  It's surprising how many people suffer from dry eye symptoms.
Thank you Theralife so much for ending my agony. Please feel free to use my testimony.
Sincerely,
LA, United States

Success Rate in Treating Dry Eyes

A recent “AOA News" article  reports low rates of success in treating dry eyes in doctor's offices.  Are you one of those people who tried to use eye drops to no avail.  Dry eye is one of the most frequent complaints, and yet one of the least satisfactory.

Here are some facts from this publication.

1) About half of  adults (48%) in United States experience one or more dry eye symptom(s) regularly.  For the world, multiply by 2 1/2;
2)  Almost 19% of women over the age of 55 have experienced dry eye symptoms for more than 10 years,  Typically they tried eye drops, prescription eye drops, puntal plugs, nothing helped.
3) Sixty Nine Percent (69%) of the people who experience one or more dry eye symptom(s) have not visited a eye care professional to treat symptoms
4)  Those who visit an eye care professional to treat dry eye symptoms, 19% visited more than once before finding relief, and 22% reported that they still have not found relief.
This publication indicates that of all the ocular complaints, dry eye symptoms out number them all in the doctor's offices.  People who take relief into their own hands experience significant visual and quality of life issues due to dry eye, and have not found substantial relief from the condition.

TheraLife is here to help.

Why is this happening?
Several possible explanations.

1. Eye doctor's training in the medical schools are treat on the surface approach, e.g. use eye drops.  Unfortunately, frequent use of eye drops make eyes drier over time.
2. Capsules that claims to relief dry eyes packed with oily materials is targeted to lubricate your eyes through oral intake. These oils do have anti-inflammatory activities, but often by itself is insufficient for chronic dry eye relief.
3.  Capsules that contain lutein is good to prevent macular degeneration over a period of 10-15 years.  It does not relief dry eyes.

4. None of the capsules or drops deal with the fact that in chronic dry eyes, often the tear secretion glands are shut down due to inflammation.  Natural tear contain more than 300 components which is nearly impossible for artificial tears to duplicate  The body requires constant tear secretion with the correct thickness in order to lubricate your eyes comfortably.

How TheraLife Can Help

TheraLife Eye restores normal cell functions to both lacrimal ( tear volume) and meibomian glands (lubricants) for balanced lasting relief all day long.  We highly recommend Omega 3 Fish Oil to be used concurrently in order to achieve maximum results.

Visoin Correction LASIK Result In Chronic Dry Eyes- Get Relief from TheraLife

Vision correct using LASIK is now very common.  People don't want to wear glasses, or have dry eyes and they cannot tolerate contact lenses.  Even though with dry eyes, eye doctors perform LASIK anyway, which result in permanent chronic dry eyes.

The reasons include prior dry eye conditions, cornea abnormalities, severed nerves in the eye due to surgery.  So rethink LASIK and consider having dry eye for the rest of your life before signing up for a life time of regret.

Here is a story from a TheraLife customer who had LASIK induced dry eyes and how he found relief in one week.

I had lasik surgery 4 years ago.  I was told after the surgery that I will have chronic dry eyes, and  to use eyes drop.  I ended up using eye drops every hour, and my eyes were getting drier and drier.  I tried every kind of eye drop available on the market to no avail.   I ;looked up a lasik surgery forum online and noticed others have worse problems than mine.  Dry eyes was making my life very limiting and difficult.

After one year, it became clear that my eyes had completed healed as much as they could post-Lasik, I searched the Internet for treatments for dry eyes and found Theralife.  The testimonials looked promising. In desperation, I called Theralife. they were  very encouraging.  I explained that I was one year post-Lasik and that my eyes were still very dry.  They said that Theralife Eye should help and it may take 3 months to get results. I was encouraged.
I received my first order of Theralife Eye.  I followed the enclosed instructions. To my pleasant surprise I noticed relief within a week. Two weeks later, it was even better. Theralife Eye, according to their brochure, builds your own system over time and continues to improve your tear quality and tear production over time (2 to 3 months). I continued to take Theralife Eye and after about 3 months, my eyes felt very comfortable. I have been taking Theralife Eye every day ever since. When I forget once in a while, my eyes still feel great.  I have been taking Theralife Eye for 3 years now.
Thank you so much for making this wonderful product. I am able to live a normal life and have comfortable eyes because of your product.

What causes Blepharitis/Conjunctivities and Dry Eyes?

You have been diagnosed with dry eyes.  Your eyes are sticky in the mornings, eye lids inflammaed and you have been prescribed antibiotics.  You are still using eye drops constantly, warm compress,  eye lid cleaning. Your eyes are still red, dry, and irritable. What is happening?
There are many causes of red eyes, incljuding:Chronic dry eye syndrome;Conjunctivitis;and Blepharitis

Chronic Dry Eye Syndrome:

Red, dry, irritable eyes are typical signs of chronic dry eye syndrome.  The problem is, the more eye drops you use, the drier your eyes are.  You probably have already noticed this.

Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is bacterial or viral infection of the eyes. Your vision often become cloudy.  Bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointment.  Viral infections will migrate from one eye to another and runs through a 14 day course and stop.  For some viral infections, such as herpes, ocular lesion maybe common.

Blepharitis:

Blepharitis is defined as inflammation of the eye lids.  Meibomian glands which produce lubridants are often involved. Common causes for Blepharitis involve eye lids and eye lashes attracting dirt or has inflammation.  This cinlude rosacea, dandruff, allergies, bacterial growth or growth of mites on the eye lashes.  Eyes often produce sticky crusty build up in the mornings which attracts dirt, bacteria etc. and cause infection.

Threatments for Blepharitis involve warm compress twice daily, 10 minutes each time,  eye lid cleaning followed by gentle massage of both upper and lower eye lids. Blepharitis tend to recur. Eye lid hygiene is key to keep it at bay.

Symptoms of blepharitis are similar to red dry eyes - red, blurry vision, watery, irritated, tired, light sensitivity and often wake up with a crusting on the eyelashes.

Computers causing dry eyes- treatment tips from National Institutes of Health

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)- dry eyes caused by using computers is a major problem in people across all ages and economic levels.  We now even have wearable devices that are smaller than ever.

Infrequent blinking, eye strains, and eyes inability to focus on TV and computer screens because they are not flat like paper, are to blame.

Common symptoms of CVS include blurred vision, headaches, neck and shoulder pain, tired eyes, dry, irritated eyes, difficulty refocusing the eyes. Work environments such as fluorescent lights, air movments from heating and air conditioners make the dry eye symptoms worse.

People who use computers or watch a lot of TV blink less. Reduced blinking rates lead to dry eyes because eyes are not getting the re-wetting that it needs to stay moist.

Tips for relief from NIH

Make sure your work environment is ergonomically sound in order to reduce eye strain and other vision problems related to CVS.  A good pair of computer eyeglasses can help you see better at the right distance range for viewing a computer screen.  There are also shields to reduce glare from the computer screen.

Eye drops don't always help!

Most people, however, reach for over the counter eye drops. Frequent use of eye drops make your eyes drier.  Your eyes produce natural lubricants to thicken your tears.  This is being washed away by eye drops.  Never wash your eye balls under water.  Your eyes need to produce balanced tears on its own.

How TheraLife Eye Can Help!
TheraLife Eye restores and increases tear production naturally for sustained dry relief throughout the day.

Balancing Hormones for Dry Eye Relief

Hormonal changes and dry eyes

One of the major factor for sudden onset of dry eyes is menopause in women over 50.  Hormone imbalance happens in men also.

Hormone Receptors found on the Cornea-
The extent your hormones affect your eye health depends on your genetic makeup and lifestyle. However, research studies have linked androgen (testosterone) and estrogen receptors on the cornea  meibomian gland of the eye. There is a correlation between the production of tears and our sex hormones.

Inflammation in Dry Eyes Caused by Hormone Imbalance
The result of dry eyes is inflammation. Inflammation causes the release of substances that  make your eyes red, itchy, and swollen. The onset of dry eyes often coincides with other signs of drying in menopause, like sore joints and dry vaginal tissues. Restoring the body's balance between estrogen, progesterone and testosterone is very important for dry eyes.   Symptoms of dry eye can be a warning sign that your body’s detox capabilities are on overload.

Importance of Omega 3 Fish Oil

The inflammation connection to dry eye is causing growing number of eye doctors prescribing omega-3 supplements or fish oil as a dry eye treatment protocol.  Recent research reported that women with a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids reduced their risk of dry eye by 20%.

Increase  omega-3 fatty acids( Fish Oil) intake or by eating fish like mackerel, tuna, or wild salmon or certain nuts and seeds benefit the eye and your whole body.  They have been shown to naturally reduce inflammation. Omega 3 Fish Oil also help in the stimulation of tear secretion and increase the oils in that secretion. Additionally, they may moderate excess estrogen production. And all of these benefits get at the root of dry eyes by providing natural lubrication rather than temporary “artificial” relief.

Conventional dry eye treatments and “artificial tears
The most common conventional treatment for dry eye is drops or “artificial tears” that temporarily relieve symptoms by restoring fluid to the eye. Unfortunately, the more drops you use, the drier your eyes become.  It is like washing your eyes under a faucet, washing away all the natural lubricants you produce.

Using drops is like pouring water into a dry well instead of looking for a new spring — to find permanent relief.  Theralife Can Help- See Below

Nutrition and Restore Hormone Balance fro Dry Eye Relief

Every body is unique so you may need to experiment to find a combination of changes that work for you.  Supplemental essential fatty acids, in addition to a highly nutritious diet, are helpful for women of all ages with dry eyes.

A. Optimize your nutrition. Eat three balanced meals a day, consisting of:
1.   whole foods
2.    daily multivitamin.
3.  Omega 3 fatty acid  - be sure it is free of Mercury and PCB contamination- e.g TheraLife Omega 3 Fish Oil
4.   Vit E- which helps Omega 3 functionality

B. Balance your hormones.
Endocrine support can help the body generate its natural levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Simple dietary changes, by eating more whole grains and less sugar and processed foods can help control insulin levels and reduce chronic inflammation.

C.  Evaluate your medications. If you are on medication, speak with your doctor about the possibility of it contributing to your dry eyes. There may be alternatives that cause fewer side effects.

D.  Avoid excessive pollution and other irritants. – Quit Smoking

E.  Hydrate and humidify.  6-8 glasses of water or fluids per day. Use Humidifier

F.  Blink!

G.  Practice care with contact lenses.
Keep lenses very clean, consider wearing them less, or explore lenses designed for dry eyes. Not all drops can be used with contacts, so check the labels. TheraTears makes a product specifically designed for contact wearers with dry eyes.

H.  Get more sleep!
