In a research study, autologous serum drops have shown to be
effective in the management of Sjogren's dry eyes because it contain vitamins, growth
factors and other components similar to natural tears. The purpose of this research study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of AS eye drops combined with
punctal plugs in patients with Sjogren's related dry eye.
This was a retrospective study of a total of 56 eyes of 28 patients diagnosed with primary or secondary Sjogren's Syndrome with symptoms of dry eye and a history of treatment with Autologous Serum eye drops. Schirmer test value ( measure tear volume), tear breakup time (TBUT)- measure tear viscosity- thickness, and fluorescein and Rose Bengal staining scores at baseline, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and >1 year after treatment were evaluated.

Conclusion - long-term application of AS eye drops was found to be an effective and safe treatment for SS dry eye.
The addition of ppunctal plugs in combination with Autologous eye drops was found to have an additive effect on SJogren's dry eye. Sjogren's require aggressive therapy in order to prevent ocular surgace damage.
